KIES Introduces VR

The Knoch School District received a grant for 3 classroom sets of virtual reality goggles from their education foundation, the Knoch Knights Legacies Foundation.  One is housed in a learning support classroom at Knoch High School, while the other two are on carts, available to any teacher who might want to use them in their classroom to enhance a lesson.

Knoch Middle School social studies teacher Damon Andring and Knoch Intermediate Elementary School fifth grade teacher Mr. Brent Rodgers both took on the role of Building Specialist in VR, assisting other teachers in their respective buildings on how to use the devices.

To kick off their use at Knoch Intermediate Elementary School, Mrs. Krisann Lambert chose to teach a lesson about the September 11 attacks on New York City.  With Mr. Rodgers’s help, the lesson went off really well, and the students enjoyed this approach to exploring New York City.  Students were viewing the twin towers memorial after their lesson on the events of 9/11. They made great observations and connections.

While the focus of the devices’ use for this school year will be in the social studies department, they are available to any teacher who wants to try them.  The program provides lessons in art, science, cyber safety, and many other subjects.
